International Women’s Day 2026 came alive in vibrant colors at Government Science School Lafia, where the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Nasarawa State, in collaboration with The Promise Ebitu Foundation, Girls and Books Initiative, Nigerian Youth Parliament, and Impact Forge, hosted a powerful community event centered on the global theme: “Rights, Justice, Action: For All Women and Girls.”

The celebration brought together students, educators, youth leaders, and advocates for a day filled with dialogue, learning, and inspiration. At the heart of the event was an engaging panel discussion featuring two distinguished female barristers and a seasoned nurse, each offering valuable perspectives on advancing gender equality and justice in Nigeria.

Their conversation addressed urgent national issues, especially the rising cases of gender-based violence and underscored the need for collective, actionable strategies to protect women and girls. The speakers emphasized that safeguarding women’s rights requires more than awareness it demands consistent advocacy, legal enforcement, and community-driven support systems.
They also highlighted the persistent gender gap in governance. With women representing only 3.9% of Nigeria’s parliamentary seats, the panelists called for intentional efforts to promote women’s participation in leadership and public service. Their message to young women was clear: build networks, mentor others, and create pathways that amplify women’s voices in innovation, policy, and decision-making.

The event not only showcased the dedication of YALI and its partners but also served as a reminder that achieving gender justice in Nigeria requires collaborative effort and sustained commitment. By empowering young voices and equipping them with the knowledge to advocate for change, the organizers demonstrated a shared resolve to usher in a more inclusive and equitable future for all women and girls.
